Colin Bell
High–flyer
Small rat with big brown eyes,
up above the world so high,
you look surprized on the ride of your life.
Did you never dream of upward propulsion
or the horrors of aerodynamics?
You've the wide-eyed look of a fairground kid,
frightened, hysterical, thrilled.
Speeding through air with those unblinking eyes,
plump body puffed up and rounded,
you'd look quite cute in your cuddly terror
if we ignore the raptor's grip.
When scampering earth-bound did you never look up?
Did no one tell you there are powers above?
Invincible forces. remorseless talons,
with no regard for our scurrying plans,
simply snatch us away without warning.
