And Now We Go And Spoil It All Again

and now we go and spoil it all again:
you can't forget my first broken promise
and I resist forgiveness on a chain.
We're prophets scared to tread near this abyss.

You want to recreate those early days
before recriminations broke the spell
and left us far apart within a maze
perpetual pin–balls playing bagatelle.

Each time we reunite you count the cost
your outstretched arms remind me of my guilt.
You try to show me what I almost lost –
I'm your rescue cat feasting on spilt milk.

My shallowness betrays what lies beneath,
your wisdom's knife is better in its sheath.
