St Giles Rookery
I think that I am vastly tired,
What inkiness written about me in
The scraps of rags reported to be news,
In these parts lives are stripped from the bone
Before the copper has his breakfast,
What fool enters these passages with a plan to leave
The same way he came in, relations are had and
Scourges are flayed when the ships deliver
Plague and plumes from the farthest dark holes,
Young ones carry the blister, dying ones are
Barely two-score alive and pleased to be
Headed for the peace of Dante's hell,
Around abouts we do not tell the young lies,
Better they become disappointed gradually
Rather than with a slap of the face.
