Midnight moon

the car alarm
suddenly stops
and it's as if
it had never sounded

fully awake
I can hear
the night settling
back into stillness

in the bush reserve
a ruru offers
a first
tentative call

then repeats
and repeats it
more confidently
anticipating a reply
