I Must Confess I Still Need the Medicine of Sitting
or
Every Spine A Bodhi Tree*
Today I sat with the woman burned to death And The man who did it
The children and their teachers shot to death on the first day of school
And The one who shot and the father who gifted his child an assault weapon
The two high school girls, raped And The school security police officer, convicted got three months for doing it
Today I sat as I have Without definition Breathing every iota of this apparent world unfiltered And Because I get distracted, get up
Clean the house Feed the dog Save the slug from direct sunlight
And As long as I am able eventually I'll go back to this medicine of sitting
And Because I know Every moment is my teacher Then every moment is to be integrated And From this place with heart wide open, Surrender over and over again Surrender.
To offer is to become
The enlightened intent will not turn away
*According to Buddhist traditions, the first human being achieved enlightenment, or became the
Buddha, underneath a Bodhi Tree. "Bodhi" is Sanskrit for "enlightenment," so "the Bodhi tree"
translates directly to English as "the tree of enlightenment
