Minds Grow in Solitude

I once befriended a girl trapped
in a mirror. She couldn't talk, so we exchanged
eyewritten notes. I was, seemingly,

seventeen heartbreaks old.
Under the mineral moon, I tried to read myself
but could only slide down a singing waterfall.

Reflections are wholehearted; they have
nothing else to give but themselves.
They display frozen facts, but can't unfringe

a room-temperature judgement.
What was I then
and what "now" is now?

I have since been swimming with jellyfish,
but the green water from that mirror
has never flowed through my heart again.
