A barn owl's cry shatters the savage night
like a stray howling at the moon.
Like something almost being lost, we bury
our heads in the evils of the world
without a nod to your fight to stay alive.
And like the field mouse running for its life,
or the barn owl's indifference
to suffering, we demand your surrender.
Your will to ours, as the branches of elm bend
relentlessly in the walled gardens
of Belmont Close.
