All Around the Wrekin

Sunrise or sundown have become a matter of life
and death, as the flood waters rise
in the low lying meadows.
This is the place where we'd hoped to connect
but the fallen branches wash up
on the hillside
with all that remains
of the sycamore's expansive roots.

Now the sun buries all our dreams, as it descends
beyond Ercall Hill – like a blinded giant
burying bones or shovelling muck
into the River Severn.
We couldn't know evoking the sunset
would be this painful,
but I couldn't let the day pass without telling you
you are my only friend.
