Inner-City Childhood
Grey terraced streets and cobbled back alleys
Lined by chipped bricks and heavily laden washing lines,
Form a playground assault course,
In which children test their mettle,
During battles of hopscotch, Double Dutch, and Kick the Can.
But they are not the only contestants,
For disinfectant and soapy water,
Vie against the smell of stale cigarettes and gasoline,
And the ever-present hum of refuse for dominance.
Adult voices shout from open windows hinged in rust and flaking paint,
While overflowing trashcans look on with caps askew,
As silent as those felines perched idly atop walls and lintels,
Aloof spectators, more concerned with grooming themselves,
Than the feats of prowess displayed by those growing up below them.
