Heirloom
Round, smooth and heavy
its girth, a comfort to my hand.
My grand-mother kneaded
and glazed the clay a cloudy blue.
Before she fired it, she scratched
her initials JT on the bottom.
Maybe she drank the first coffee
from it. The handle broken
long ago left twin smallpox scars
but the cup survives
and gives contour to my habit.
