Turning Fifty in Spring

Purple splash of crocus, daffodils'
bombastic gold. Bright shoots push
through decaying leaves.
Everywhere the earth unclenches.
My body stiffens, out of synch
with such brash rebirth.

The widower across
the street who stoops to pull
a dandelion sees the lie
in all this spastic blossoming.
There is no starting over.
