Kit Kennedy
Learning to Miss
Miles and decades, I've moved
that jar of buttons East to West
never forgetting what thread
and button make whole.
This morning I focus on the chip
in my yellow teacup as if
by that small misstep the institution
of cheerfulness is challenged.
Why have I never created
a canister of chips? I tell myself
that favorite sweater with a button
missing is still a sweater. The cup
I'm cradling, still a cup. Time threads
all that is missing. I sip tea,
honor the chip, rename it fragment.
Tonight I'll read Sappho.
