Bridges

It is spring again. The earth is like a child that knows poems by heart. Rilke

Snow is still white in this black season.
I have grieved for the shadows that haunt me –
her gentian eyes, her grim mouth
probe still the conscience of the world –
but do not grieve for me. In spite of all
it has not been a songless winter:
the blackbird's spring notes summon
a new day from a blood-red sun.
Hill and forest will yet be stripped of mist
and sunflowers rise from blackened seeds.
No bridge is equal to a changing season
except a mother's love. She seals a future
with the burnt offering of her heart –
the only seal that never loses authority.
