Susan Howard is a poet and playwright, living in Matakana. Her poetry reflects her macro and micro view of the world. She has been published in New Zealand in Takahē Magazine, Poetry in a Mirror, a fine line, overseas in The Blue Nib, Shot Glass Journal, and Not Very Quiet.

At The Lake
It's too much of a backwater
to live here forever,
but that doesn't preclude
summer kayaking the still lake
or the daily swimming
ritual out to the pontoon,
even if scrunched toes
edge us off.
Those brisk hikes up
through the bush,
early morning bellbird call,
Tui fledglings feeding,
Quail trails on the lawn, Kereru
balancing the branches.
It's too precious a place
not to share.
