Underground Carpark At Dawn

After Adelaide 1983, a pencil drawing
by Janenne Eaton

Sunlight is forbidden
its relentless way
of holding up to scorn
Down here it's deliciously cold
all sharpness and angles
like a smart black hat tilted rakishly
shadows hunched in corners
echoes of footsteps disembodied

miasmas of oil and exhaust
white-ant the foundations
of the city
All is order and solitude
in tune with the deep past
nearer the centre of things
