Rain Prayer

In a sky made
of dust, light glows
pale shades of gray,
no beads of rain
to build rainbows,
only a rusted
view of hillsides
coated in dead
grass, a burnt
offering to no
god, thunder
a distant hum
that rises from
gopher holes
that crumble
underfoot.
