Mirrors
You don't look back at the path you've taken.
You want to leave the shards behind,
the wound you cut, the trench you dug,
a coffin set afloat on rivers of time.
The page you turned, the books you've closed,
the mouths you shut with benevolence,
the good intentions of a crime committed,
washing off the dirt and blood of history.
Teeth clenched to not let out a sound. Remorse?
Remorse is a heart singing underground,
underneath curbstones of self-righteousness.
For there is no future without the past.
Those of us who stare into the mirror,
look forward by gazing back.
