Bio

Laurice Gilbert has had poems published in many journals, anthologies and magazines across 9 countries, after realising that she hated networking and didn't have the emotional resilience for the New Zealand literary circuit. She administered the NZ Poetry Society for a decade, has had three Pushcart Prize nominations, published two collections and was once shortlisted for the Bridport Prize.

Spring

Pots of freesias and lachenalia hide
under the weeds I ignored over winter
under the strain of retiring and redirecting
my time into more lush pursuits.
Descending to my knees I approach
these innocent grasses and oxalis
and wonder if I should add Lambs' Ears
as a seed-repellent beside the aviary.
The lightening days encourage
more frequent visits out of doors –
imagining, planning, sitting, watching,
gazing with the glassy stare
of one with too many interests
taking pot shots at success.
