Flame White

for Brendan and Noreen MacNamara

This morning's view from the window
brings to mind a meld of Friedrich paintings
a flame-white disc, a framing window,
pines, the tree tops snagging a silken mist.
This silken mist, the pine trees in outline,
thin and nervous in the half-light,
hint at snow. Into this bleak landscape,
a watermarked page, I insert the tip
of my pen noting how the frame of snow
speaks to the flame-white disc.
The pines, stand like tall letters,
the serifs catch a drifting thought:
At this moment, I, the view, the paintings,
this page - all that we are – caught
in a continuous act of disappearing.
