watch him exhibit excruciating forbearance
when she sends him off in all the wrong directions
to find her sunglasses her keys her phone
he knows the last place he needs to look
is the one she mentioned but looks there anyway
as if the fiction of her remembering
is more important than sooner success
sometimes too it is himself he finds
standing still in the middle of a room
wondering if it is something of his or hers
that has been so inexplicably mislaid
