Mark Hammerschick
Almost Dead Cat
I am a man in shadows chewing light.
Wisdom teeth challenge
as incisors incise deeply, rootedly
tearing flesh singed, carbonized.
Remnants flush downward
bruised, tattered, flattened and battered
like that cat on Gilmer Road
dazed with eyes glazed
a tail still in motion
quick shallow breath then nothing
only the silence
of my beemer buzzing by.
