Tiffany Washington
On Seeing Samantha Again
You called, Tuesday,
with a whole lot of crazy in your voice.
You talked of FBI recruitment, clandestine marriages,
and the fire of the Lord burning in your belly –
I talked about dishwashers and little league
and the four caught plagiarizers in my period 7.
It was in these conversations,
I finally heard the distance of these last few months –
when I became someone else's mother
and you became someone else
I had not realized I'd abandoned you,
not until I dropped you off and forgot to look back.
