Zebedee

I've kept everything the way they left it;
a stool in its familiar place,
the basket on the table ready for bread,
nets abandoned on the shore half prepared.

I keep the boat moored at the lake's edge,
the hired men equipped, eager for work,
the fish waiting, weaving through waves,
heedless of the water's turbulence.
