In Fear For The Saftey Of Our Souls

Someone has put locks
and chains
on the fire exits of hell.
I don't think heaven is doing any better,
though it has no fire exits,
only one large gate
that opens in.

Soon the safety inspectors will descend and ascend,
and both heaven and hell
will stop taking applications;
our souls will be ejected and stranded,
left to wander between shadows
and schedules,
or stand on uneven street corners,
begging for some salvation
or crumbs of pain.
