Carolyn Gerrish lives in Sydney and has published five collections of poetry, The latest 'The View from the Moon' (Island Press, 2011). She teaches creative writing in the community and enjoys performing her work. She is currently working on her sixth collection

at 4am —
a vivacious chirping bat
gothic icon in suburbia
at a safe distance
somewhere outside
seeking the succulence
of fruit    not the
shrieking flapping
nightmare   of flying things
that swoop inside
clawing at my mind
