When You Love Slow
for Nellie
when you love slow,
your body moves with great blue
heron shape – neck elongated,
head poised for the wild below
where your toes sink into wet earth
with the old longings of tree stumps
and the hidden lives they fell for,
who soften their backs,
clean their wet fur,
their tails at home with you
here trust – lasts
when you love slow,
slow
loves you back
in still waters
