Awakened by a Poem
Before turning on the light
in the stairway
after being awakened by a poem
crying to be written
in the dark of night,
I notice the old gray cat
peering out the window
into darkness
only cats can see through.
He too, must see some kind of poetry
in raindrops
splashing on fallen leaves
which he cannot ignore
any more than I can overlook
what wakes me in the night.
