Karl Miller
In Weihai
on business waiting in a taxi at a red light at 4 in the afternoon I
glance up from my emails to
watch a man cross in front of us holding a pink package to his chest but when I look
more closely I see it is actually a child resting w/ her head on his
shoulder & I think of my own daughter back in Florida who is sleeping now at 4 in the
morning & I imagine how I'd carry
her the same way if I could & how even if that
wouldn't do much to stop traffic I'd always still do it & then the light
turns & the taxi moves & the man & child are gone & l stare down at
my phone again the emails gathered there having stolen the thought
