Not Alone

the
stars
at night —
distant suns
warming unknown life,
evolved or in their infancy,
in solar systems and undiscovered galaxies —
it's impossible to think we are alone – yet through the abnegation of knowledge
and grandiosity of universal standing,
we let the gods keep us unsafe
with earthly black holes
engulfing
the stars
at
night
