Person as Domesticated Bird

You cannot
teach it how to
speak, as some one else

has beaten you
there. It perches on your finger
like a raven

on a dead branch.
Darkness beneath
the feathered layers,

wet eyes bulging
with secrets it has no words
to convey.

Since founding Subsynchronous Press in 2000 (in Tucson, AZ), Hillary Lyon has acted as editor of the two small press poetry journals The Laughing Dog, and Veil: Journal of Darker Musings. Her poems have appeared in journals as varied as The Midwest Quarterly, EOAGH, Dreams & Nightmares, and Gutter Eloquence.
