To Beat the Band
The challenge is
not to run. I want to dance
with you, the little ones asleep
in their pup tent, the twigs
gawking, the stars
splitting their sides with glee,
the know-it-all flames spotting
the slow croon of our boots in the duff
as we hum an old faithful
from the days when your hair
was as long and unruly as mine
and we woke naked in the pup tent
brushing the strands of sun
from our eyes.
