My Father Ironing
Muscled, he stands
against a kitchen backdrop–
a broken dish in the sink–
his calloused hands gently attending
the button edge
of a new shirt, carefully
pressing the collar, the shoulder,
creasing the sleeve.
All the while he riots and laughs
as if playing some red-blooded game
on the back lawn then joining mom
on the patio for a beer.
Alicia Mooney-Flynt's work has been read in Florida Humanities, Kalliope, Poet Lore, and other publications. She is from the north (Syracuse, New York) and lives in the south (North Carolina). This is just one example of how her life is full of irony and the beauty of contrast.
