Sarah Carleton
Pin Drop
I wake at five and long for smooth silence
as the AC hums and far away the highway gears up
with cars commuting and semis whining.
Even my ear cavities are not quiet
but whoosh with pulsing blood.
When grainy hush crescendos to phone buzz
and podcasts, I rise to the surface
and hearken to daytime.
Later under closed curtain of night
I set my mind atop a dark hill where
even a meteor diving into a tree line
leaves no trace of sound.
