Surrender in Ghent
I was drunk in Lothian,
across the Firth of Forth from Fife,
When the rain stopped and
the Edinburgh lass I was in love with
left for London with an aged hippy,
Upon the Ro-Pax ferry Blue Star 1,
I passed under the Forth Bridge in the Firth enroute
from Rosyth to Zeebrugge with a girl from
Inverkeithing who ached for a fresh start
after an entanglement with heroin,
We supped local malted barley concoctions
deterring each other from a watery grave,
We hitched from Zeebrugge to Bruges alongside the Baudouin Canal
when a truck driver offered up this,
'The quickest way to end a war is to lose it' so we surrendered to
Sobriety in Ghent, never again seeing the Firth nor the Forth.
