Diane Webster
Funeral Trigger
Upstairs the vacuum cleaner
whirs against the carpet
like the buffer Dad used
on the cars he repaired
like soles whispering
on mortuary floors.
This morning across the street
at the Presbyterian church
a silver casket is
wheeled through the open doors.
Every funeral flashes like SOS
in my mind as mourners
swirl in confused pacing
waiting until the last minute
to enter the somber insides
where air yields no oxygen.
