The Toll
She fills a wineglass from
yet another bottle, and asks,
"Why do you keep filling
those little notebooks?"
"To keep sane", I tell her,
switching radio stations.
"One after another?", she gulps.
"Yes."
"You pay the rent doing that?"
"I can hardly pay the toll."
She refills her glass and nods...
pretending to understand.

S. A. Gerber is a native and resident of Los Angeles, CA.
