David Subacchi
Don't Let Them see It
This afternoon we washed his gravestone
With a sponge for cleaning cars
Watched shining water trickle
In streams across the marble
Cleaned away rotting flowers
Replaced them with fresh ones
Plucked a few weeds
Generally tidied up
I nodded in his direction
Before we left him to it
That was always his way
Not showing much emotion
"Don't let them see it" he would say
And I felt a little better
Though we miss him every day.
