Get Well Flowers
Yellow and white daisies,
red roses, purple asters,
pastel osteospermum,
white carnations choke
the room where my daughter
breathes, eyes shut, below towers
hung with IV bags on slow drip:
bouquets speared with tridents
that clasp notes scrawled
in all the hieroglyphics for "live!"
flowers cut off at the base,
their rigid stems
suspended in clear, cold water.
