The Remains

Bone
tired,
I dug,
sorting through
accumulations,
your stacks, boxes and collections.
Your clothes were first to go-- charitable donations.
All your hoardings were pushed to the side to make way for cleaners and real estate agents.

That junk waited in my garage to outlast my grief-- your dusty, yellowed legacy.
I read each letter one last time through dry, swollen eyes
and stacked the hodgepodge backyard pyre.
Inflamed memories,
clutter to
ashes
to
dust.
