The Sea
(Inspired by the Thomas Moran painting The Much Resounding Sea,
oil on canvas, 1884, American born in England.)

No
more
to hear
the resounding sea
that pounds the windswept shore,
striking with a force that knows no bounds.

No
more
to watch
the blackened waves
break white against the cliffs
and cover the piers and jetties with spume.

No
more
to relish
its subtle murmurs
on days calm and clear;
gone – tinted waves aglow on its vast veneer.

No
more
to follow
a seabird's flight
as it spreads and beats
tattered wings in the raging northeasterly at twilight.

No
more,
no more
the nearby clashing
sea, only a silent haven,
utter stillness, only the dreamless sleep of eternity.
