I cup a bowl of chili, sticking
my face above it to breathe in
the rising steam, and wish
the world were more literal
this afternoon, not thick with
connotation. This morning,
watching you brush your hair,
I marveled at the way you
always squint one eye as
you pull the brush through
tangled curls. I wanted
something more then.
