Broken Open

The shore this morning
is like a painting she had once seen:
the wind rising like rhetoric,
gunmetal clouds closing
in, waves like soldiers
moving forward, one after the other,
pounding themselves to oblivion
on the rocks.
She turns her face
to the spray,
feels the wind grab her, wrap her spine
to belly
until her breasts pull and pucker,
her head high, her mouth
broken open–
then the rain–
those fat drops
that fall like tears.
