Bio

Margaret Beverland completed a Creative Writing Diploma in 1998, but never imagined herself writing poetry. But retirement and a move from the city to a sea-side kiwifruit orchard near Katikati, New Zealand, has inspired her and her haiku and poems have been published in journals both locally and internationally. Her other interests are vegetable gardening, and taking her German Short-haired Pointer, Steffi, kayaking and swimming during the summer months.

Finding Jesus

Of all the unexpected places
he was on reception at the Donatello.
Handsome in his business suit,
clean-shaven, short dark hair,
and a wicked twinkle in his eye.

A different Jesus to the one
I am accustomed to.
His patter so smooth and quick –
he could have sold me snake oil –

and his partner Val, she was right
on cue. Together, I believe, they
could be a successful stand-up comedy team.
Then I wondered, what happened to Magdalene?

But, this is the year twenty–eleven
at a hotel in San Francisco
Man, that Jesus, he sure gets around.
