When There Is Light...

(a tanka sequence)

morning shadows
a lampshade's latticed fringe
quivers on the wall...
your books still piled
exactly as you left them

around a boar's tooth
on the withered medicine gourd
a glinting gold ring –
our time on far islands
dissolves with the mists

your buckled lotus –
sad memories remain in
that brass candlestick,
years of dining together
subdued, and yet...

western sunlight glows
through a Balinese batik –
our cosy bedroom...
now restive, I discover
I'm best when left all alone
