The Great Escape

In that desk, some ornaments,
an art deco bowl and a photo frame,
stored away from parental eyes,
buried treasure for another time.

Cake pillars and bone china mugs,
a soap dispenser - random things,
entries on a secret list
quietly intoned as a mantra.

Prayers are whispered every night,
escapist dreams repeated
from a single bed in a barren room,
a hermit's febrile vision.

Tea towels, with rural scenes,
a single, long-stemmed crystal glass,
all packed, ready, hidden.
Left behind when you dared to run.
