Sensitive Souls

In delirium or defiance
there is a little one left
behind on the downward
cable while his fellows' swarm
off, their formation a dagger
unsheathed against land.

For a while hesitancy governs
his mood, then he hops danseur like,
agitation shaking his slightening
plumage.

Feigning mettle he flings off in pursuit
of his kin, to find them returning
sated. His disappointment stains the
western skies.
