(for M.W, P.R & G.H)

it was in another century, we asked
too much of you,
we asked for the moon, the meaning of the stars,
but you were hardly treading water yourself
you said the human creature was the highest
expression of matter on earth,
you were wise beyond your years, except with women,
but we were never sure
you said I was the 'soul of chivalry' – we
have not forgotten,
twenty-five years of exile are enough for any man
let's welcome you back now, old friend, unsadden the heart,
we shall sit on that fraternal veranda
and watch the dying sky
