Nile

Turning my back on the hotel's five-star comforts,
I appropriate for the duration, a river facing sun bed,
where holiday reading must compete with the west bank,
that is an infinite frieze of crops, minarets, palms trees...
painted in a Dulux colour chart of greens.
And just yards away, the scudding Nile, with bruiser cruise ships
muscling their way up and down stream; crocodile shaped flotsam
that teases, despite the signature reptiles being safely sectioned
beyond the Aswan Dam.
Everywhere, the Z framed ibis, like a hieroglyph come to life,
and the soundtrack, a cacophony of adhams, with Ian Paisley rasp.
So, I am not here to cougar catch some Egyptian boy
for a week of no strings sex, in exchange for a camera.
or become ensnared with a waiter beautiful as Mo Salah
who would press his suit, in exchange for a British passport.
