"... brevity is the soul of wit ..."

Bio

Margaret Beverland completed a Creative Writing Diploma in 1998, but never imagined herself writing poetry. But retirement and a move from the city to a sea-side kiwifruit orchard near Katikati, New Zealand, has inspired her and her haiku and poems have been published in journals both locally and internationally. Her other interests are vegetable gardening, and taking her German Short-haired Pointer, Steffi, kayaking and swimming during the summer months.

A Lock of Hair

Inside this envelope, a lock of her hair
taken the day she had her first trim
the memory evoked fresh and clear
of a plump baby girl who grew tall and slim.

Taken the day she had her first trim
she followed my every move in the mirror
a plump baby girl who grew tall and slim
face grave as her curls fell to the floor.

She followed my every move in the mirror
her critical eye, even then, made me smile
face grave as her curls fell to the floor
I gathered one up, to keep on file.

Her critical eye, even then, made me smile
the memory evoked fresh and clear
I gathered one up, to keep on file
inside this envelope, a lock of her hair.
