Child

I still call her mommy and today
on her ninetieth birthday I felt
like a child, a small peanut
in an old piece
of chocolate.

I sang happy birthday in a voice
no one could love
and she listened and at the perfect
moment she said "thank you".
"Is this Joan?"

Joan Page-Durante has been writing poetry since the age of 16 although the angst of adolescence has been replaced with a kind of seasoned cynical optimism and a whole lot of gratitude.
